We checked out Google Voice earlier this month and loved how it lets users consolidate all their phone numbers into a single, unchanging number. Even better, you can use it to text all day and all night without ever incurring a texting charge from your carrier.
Well, it seems Apple (or more likely its carrier partner, AT&T) didn't like that so much, since it rejected the Google Voice iPhone app (we had tried it on an Android phone). Here's the official word from a Google spokesperson who spoke to TechCrunch:
Apple did not approve the Google Voice application we submitted six weeks ago to the Apple App Store. We will continue to work to bring our services to iPhone users — for example, by taking advantage of advances in mobile browsers.
As a consequence, other apps that use Google Voice have been pulled from the App Store, includingGV Mobile, even though its developer says the app was personally approved an Apple senior VP.
It appears the battle lines are being drawn once again in the war between cellphone carries and, well, everyone else. Google Voice, which some hail as one of the best things to ever happen to telephones, may be simply too useful to survive.
