Modu The Lightest Phone in the world

It’s the lightest phone in the world as approved by the Guinness book.
modu can be slipped into a wide variety of modu jackets...

modu is the heart of the modu ecosystem. First of all, modu is a tiny, sleek, sophisticated mobile phone. In fact, it’s the lightest phone in the world as approved by the Guinness book of world records. You can use modu to talk, SMS or listen to music stored on the built-in 1GB memory. modu includes Bluetooth connectivity and can be used as a mass storage device. modu has all you would expect from a phone... but it is a lot more: modu can be slipped into a wide variety of modu jackets - stylishly designed phone enclosures - and modu mates – modu-enabled consumer electronics devices.

modu, the world’s lightest mobile phone, release its first modu jackets portfolio for the modu phone. The much anticipated modu jackets complement the modu phone, and are the first of many jackets that modu will introduce in 2009.
These modu jackets will be commercially available beginning in the second quarter of this year as modu rolls out its mobile phone and ecosystem for the first time. At the heart of the modu ecosystem is a tiny, modular and sleek mobile phone. In addition to complete mobile functionality, the modu phone is a music player and a mass storage device containing 2 GB of internal memory. The innovative modu phone presents a bold graphical user interface and a unique seven-key keypad to perform basic functions even without a modu jacket. For added functionality and style, users can easily slip the modu phone into a range of modu jackets. This modu ecosystem offers boundless – and affordable – possibilities.

We can easily declare 2009 year of fashion cell phone follow-ups. Some months ago we introduced you to the LG PRADA II. Now we’ve got our hands on the prototype of the second Samsung with the Giorgio Armani logo on it (M7500 Night Effect was branded as Emporio Armani).

There is only one thing in common between these two though, the presence of a full QWERTY keyboard. While the LG PRADA II seems to have gained extra weight and managed to ruin the image of its trendy predecessor, the Giorgio Armani is another cup of tea. Our prototype is running on the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS, but the final unit will have WM6.5 on board. Aside from being a capable smart phone, the device seems to pack serious multimedia punch – DivX/Xvid video support, 5-megapixel camera and huge, 3.5-inch AMOLED display.

The 3.5-inch display delivering resolution of 480x800 is perfectly capable of meeting the needs of contemporary users. If you girlfriend says something like this to you though, you should be worried indeed. Sliding the screen sideways reveals the keyboard and it can also be tilted at an angle to allow easier text entry, similarly to HTC Touch Pro2 and Nokia N97. Both send and end keys are below the screen along with mandatory inscription that reads Giorgio Armani and what looks like a chain store, bargain basement knockoff of a sapphire paste. Pressing it once calls up the main menu, while holding it pressed causes the multitasking menu to pop on screen.

The Samsung Giorgio Armani looks like quite a promising, Windows Mobile powered smartphone. As a whole, we are pleasantly impressed by the personalization pack that the manufacturer seems to have polished to perfection to allow improved ease of use, but we just don’t know if how many people would go for its rather kitschy overall look. If you are looking for a functional, business device that will undoubtedly attract attention, the Samsung Giorgio Armani is definitely your option. We will let you know more about it when we have managed to get our hands on a final, retail unit.

NOKIA X6 AND X3

The Nokia X6 and X3: One's smart, one's not.

The Nokia X6 and X3: One's smart, one's not.

One smartphone and one dumbphone. That’s the ultimate breakdown of the X6 and X3, two new Nokia handsets coming in the fourth quarter of 2009. Both of them are, shall we say, sleek as hell.

The X3 isn’t so much impressive as it is impressive-looking. Compare this to the older Nokia 5610 and 5310 XpressMusic phones, and you’ll probably notice at first glance that Nokia’s S40 phone designs have come a long way since the XpressMusic days.

Under the hood, the X3 is a quad-band slider phone (no 3G, unfortunately) with a 3.2 megapixel camera. There’s integrated stereo speakers, hopefully on par with the 5800XM and not the N97, dedicated music keys, a 3.5mm connector, and Bluetooth 2.1 (A2DP and AVRCP profiles supported). You also get a lighted Navi-key.

Moving on, the X6 is the phone to watch out for. In a nutshell, it’s the next evolution of the 5800 XpressMusic. You get a full touch-screen running Symbian S60 Fifth Edition, 3G, 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash, A-GPS, WLAN, and a 434 mhz processor. Internal memory matches the N97’s 32 gigabytes but leaves out the external card slots. No real love lost there. The screen size is the same as the 5800XM, at 3.2 inches (16:9 widescreen resolution). Battery has dropped a bit to up to 8 hours on GSM and 5 hours on 3G.

Like I mentioned before, both phones are slated for release in Q4 of this year. Pricing is what you’d expect: 450 euros for the X6, a mere 115 euros for the X3.
