CANDIDATE INTERVIEW PREPARATION

Preparation is the key to a successful interview. Thorough preparation enhances your chances of accomplishing the two main objectives of an interview. The interviewer's objective is to decide whether or not to make you a job offer by evaluating your history, educational background, your strengths and accomplishments, as well as your level of motivation, attitude and personality. In other words, to find out if you're the right person for the job, what is your potential for promotion and whether or not you will fit into the company environment. As the candidate your objective is to satisfy the interviewer's objective, as well as learn those things you need to know about the position and the company so that you can make an intelligent decision about the job - and keep focused on "Getting a job offer."

You've just built the foundation for a successful job interview by reviewing the steps in The Interview Success Plan.

To get the most out of your efforts:

1. Underline the key knowledges, skills and abilities from the job description of the job that you're seeking.
2. Look up the knowledges, skills and abilities in the Job Function Index and review the sample interview questions and answer tips. Review additional sample interview questions and answer tips in the Career/Job Index.
3. Notice how the question changes and how this change might impact your answer. The same care with which you read the questions must be used when you listen to the questions in the interview.

A resume/CV is your primary resource tool to presenting your skills and knowledge for job openings. You will need to spend time preparing an effective and attractive resume/CV for distribution at the career fair. There are many available resources for resume writing(see links below).

2) Research & Planning

Obtain a listing of companies that are participating in the Campus/Job Fair. Research these companies and develop a "must see" list companies you would be interested in working for. Look the companies up on the Internet - take notes of business strategies and relevant current news. These notes can provide good talking points to impress the company representatives at the career fair.

Dress in business Attire. Many employers want to see neat, clean, and professional appearance.

4) At the Campus/Job Fair

Approach the "must see" companies on your list. Introduce yourself with a firm handshake and give the representative a copy of your resume. Inquire about open positions and introduce your background and interests in brief. Highlight the experience that would give the company reasons to hire you over someone else. Refer to the notes you collected during the company research. Ask when the company anticipates interviewing for the open positions. Ask for a business card, and offer yours, and thank the representative for their time.

5) Post Campus/Job Fair

Follow-up with potential leads from the Campus/Job fair. Upload your resume into the company's databases to gain further exposure for additional positions. E-mail the representative you spoke to at the career fair thanking them for their time and re-expressing your interest in working for the company.

The author won on the reality TV show The Apprentice, in which Donald Trump (who provides a foreword) slowly eliminates potential personal assistants until one is left standing. Rancic puts down, in tumbling first-person prose, the strategy he used to win, as well as how, back in 1995, he co-founded and ran a small mail-order company, Cigars Around the World. Rancic never went to business school, and his book might be boiled down to "rely on your observations and common sense, and on your close relationships." Nearly every chapter is loaded with advice gleaned from family members or friends with whom he has collaborated, salted with a smattering of approaches Rancic picked up from his own reading of how-tos and from his work life. The result sets the book apart: Rancic takes work seriously, and everything in the book is something he personally has tried out; his successes and travails (including a fire at his company) come through clearly and conversationally, as from a big brother. The last two of seven chapters cover his time on the show with "Mr. Trump" and offer candid takes on the other contestants and the show's productions. For a loquacious "how-I-did-it," Rancic's book debut is surprisingly satisfying.
