NEW DELHI, INDIA: Bharti Airtel, India’s telecom major, Tuesday announced the launch of the Blackberry Curve 8520 smartphone on its prepaid and postpaid platforms in collaboration with Research in Motion (RIM), the Canada-based manufacturer of the device.
Following on the heels of the launch of Nokia’s E-series phones that have most of the standard Blackberry features, the Bharti’s smartphone will be available from Aug 7.
However, RIM India vice president Frenny Bawa denied that Tuesday’s launch was a reaction to Nokia’s E-series, saying, ‘We are pioneers in smartphones. We do not need to react to any market development.’
Bawa added, “With its combination of industry-leading messaging capabilities, consumer-friendly features and Airtel’s aggressive marketing support, we are confident that the new BlackBerry Curve 8520 will help appeal to a much wider audience of customers in India.”
In addition to providing the industry’s leading mobile solution for email, messaging (IM, SMS, MMS) and social networking and an easy-to-use, full-QWERTY keyboard for comfortable, accurate typing, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 comes with powerful multimedia features, useful applications to help users stay organized and productive, full HTML browsing and seamless Wi-Fi support, said a press release.
While Blackberry Curve 8520 is priced at Rs.15,990, E-series phones were priced in the range from Rs.12,500.
